Tomorrow, Tuesday November 1st is opening day. TECO’s website has information regarding the viewing center, along with web cams to view the manatee from the comfort of your home.

As the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay water temperature cools, more and more manatees head to the warm waters of the discharge canal for the power plant. The best viewing is when the water temps get below 68 degrees. Presently, the Gulf of Mexico water temp is 72 degrees so there likely will not be as many manatee present as there will be in December or January.

Beside Manatee, one will often get to see spinner shark flying through the air and also plenty of rays.

Though I love watching the manatee from the viewing platform at TECO, there is nothing quite like being in the water with them swimming by in the summer. Fort De Soto Beach seems to be where we run into most of them. We can’t wait until next summer.

If you will be visiting the Tampa area, Tampa Electric’s Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach is well worth a visit.
